So You Want to be a Trail Runner?

Welcome to the journey! As with life, the trails have their obstacles. There are hills and roots and rocks and mud puddles. While we really hope no one ever falls, sometimes it’s inevitable. Even so, you just pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and keep putting one foot in front of the other to finish your run.

Trail running is a loose term because in reality it’s rare that you’re running 100% of the time. We all need little breaks.  There are challenges on the trail and sometimes running at them, doesn’t always work. You need to strategize and execute where you will plant that next step. So let us be the first to say, walking, hiking, taking a moment to catch your breath; all entirely acceptable and expected.

For the Rookies: Don’t be afraid of taking that leap right into the mud puddle. It’s not as messy as you think and the mud always washes off. Yes, it may be slow moving at first, but we all get hooked one way or another. Whether it’s because of the nature surrounding you, the challenge in front of you or the stressors you are leaving behind you, the trails have it all; you just need to start.

For the Road Runners: Step onto the dirt, you’ll thank us sooner rather than later and so will your knees. It’s softer in the woods, quieter… you’ll find yourself some high quality Zen. There are no cars out here, less people to dodge, and the impact of each step is gracefully cushioned by leaves. Naturally your pace will be a little slower, but don’t worry. You are already a runner so this isn’t really new, just new territory to conquer. It’s probably the change of pace your mind and body are looking for.

For the Workout Enthusiasts: I promise you’ll be sore in places you didn’t even know you had muscles. The trails are a whirlwind of adventure and while you may get to choose the distance you run, you don’t get choose the workout you have. Nature does that for you. Fallen tree… are you going to hurdle it, or go under? River crossing... how good is your core balance, to cross on stones and keep dry? Hills… what type of stamina are you working with? If you want a challenge and you want to push yourself we’ll see you on race day.
